We are like a quilt -Many patches, many pieces, many colors, many sizes, all woven and held together by a common thread.
Life is like a quilt.
It will always be to a large extent,
what we ourselves make of it.

Law Entrance Exam

Law Exams

The law system not only acts as an entrance of any judicial structure, but also forms a prominent part of proper functioning of any country!

Law Entrance Exams

It feels really good to know that there are numerous entrance exams for the law admissions in India. In a way, it portrays the enhancements in the law admissions procedures and huge developments in the law infrastructure in the country. It’s logical that there can’t be a unique entrance exam procedure for law admissions across the country, because the law system and procedures differ from each states of the country. As we know that India is a land of diversity in many things, like, languages, regions, religions, political system, etc… it would be difficult to have a unique selling preposition for the judicial procedures in the country. Some of the important entrance exams are described, as follows:

Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)

The under graduate and the post graduate admissions are accomplished through the Common Law Admission Test to the 11 National Law Universities in India. It is a two hour admission test comprising of questions from English, Mathematics, logical reasoning, and general knowledge with mandatory questions from the legal sections of the law. Every year, the CLAT will be conducted by one of the participating national law universities, which would be topping the priority list, according to seniority.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT), India.

It is a standardized test, which is adopted by multiple law colleges and universities in India. The LSAT is been established by the USA basedLaw School Admission Council’ (LSAC) for the specific administration of law school activities in India. Hence, the colleges and universities, who are admitting their students through LSAT, would also have the opportunity of registering the international students through the overseas testing center facility. It is a two hours and thirty five minutes exam, comprising of questions from three sections, such as, logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension in addition to the mandatory questions from the legal section. It doesn’t contain any negative markings, i.e. the marks will be allotted only to the correct answers.

Kerala Law Entrance Examination (KLEE)

This entrance test is conducted by the ‘Commissioner for Entrance Examination’, Government of Kerala, Thiruvanathapuram. This exam is basically conducted for the admissions to the government colleges in various districts of Kerala. The admissions are provided to the 5 year, 3 year LL.B courses and 2 year L.L.M course. The entrance exam comprises of 65 questions from general knowledge, 65 questions from English and 70 aptitude type questions from legal studies.

KIIT Law School Admission Test (KLSAT)

This entrance test is conducted majorly for the law admissions to the KIIT Law School, Bhubaneswar. This entrance exam is conducted in 60 cities, across the country. The significant part of this law school is that it offers three conjoined degree courses, such as, B.A.LL.B, B.B.A.LL.B, B.Sc.LL.B, which provides an integrated platform to the law degrees by providing the choices of major and minor papers in the subjects of liberal arts, management, and natural sciences. The KIIT Law School has implemented the suggested curriculum of the ‘Bar Council of India’ in the year 2009 and has also been admitted as the member of the ‘International Association of Law Schools’, Washington, U.S.A, ‘LAWASIA’ and ‘Australia Legal Aid Clinic’.

No one can ever deny that India has got a strong judicial system, but at the same time, everyone can also remember the complications of implementing the same in the country. This is because, India is a land of various cultures, languages, regions, caste systems, etc… the most prominent thing of all, is the complicated political system of India. All these reasons make it impossible to have a unique procedure of law system in all the states of the country. Because of this, the law admissions also differ in each state of the country and of course, the law entrance exams too differ! Though, the Supreme Court holds the ultimate control of the entire judicial system in the country, the sub control of the law activities are handed over to the respective judicial system of each state.

After seeing the complications of the law admissions, a memorandum had been signed among the premier law institutions in the country, agreeing for the Common Law Admission Test. Some of the premier institutions, which are admitting the students via the Common Law Admission Test, are National Law School of India University, Bangalore, National Law University, Jodhpur, and The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, etc… At present, there are around 11 premier institutions in the list. The implementation of this procedure differs, each year. Again, nobody can be assured about the procedures, as it differs according to the institutions. I would say that in India, definitely the law system and procedures are standardized, but not simplified.

In any profession, first comes the premier institution. It is good that there is a common entrance test for most of the premier institutions in the country, as more number of students would aim to get into the premier institutions. But, this is not a completed list, as there are many premier institutions, which still didn’t sign up the memorandum. Hence, the confusion starts at this point, so if a student wants to try a premier institution, which doesn’t accept the CLAT, would be left without choice and in turn should write the entrance exam conducted by that specific institution. Likewise, a student would be forced to write as many entrance exams as possible in order to check the availability of seats in at least in few of the best colleges.

There is another type of entrance exam, which is accepted by many of the institutions, called as, Law School Admission Test, India. It is important to specify ‘India’ in the LSAT, because it is established by an international council of USA. Though it is accomplished by an international council, its procedures and structures are framed according to the Indian judicial system. The colleges, which accept this type of entrance exam, are Jindal Global Law School, Haryana, Law College Dehradun, MATS Law School, Raipur, etc… Hence, the students are in the panicking situations in order to decide on the entrance exams of their preferred choice of colleges/universities. The complexities majorly persist to decide on the standards of the law college/university, because the students are not provided with either, the clear guidance, or with the specifications of the standards of the entrance examinations.

AIBE 2011

All India Bar Examination

Purpose of AIBE:

  • To assess an advocate’s ability to practice the profession of law
  • To assess capabilities at a basic level
  • To set a minimum standard for admission to the practice of law
  • To assess an advocate’s analytical abilities and basic knowledge of law

The All India Bar Examination will test skills and basic knowledge critical for a new entrant to the practice of the profession of law. It is intended to check for eligibility, rather than expertise. Any law student graduating in Academic Year 2009-10 onwards would have to appear for the All India Bar Examination (after enrollment as an advocate) in order to practice law in India.

Methodology:

  • Will be conducted in nine languages, and at various examination centres across India.
  • Application Fee of Rs.1,300/- (includes price of receiving preparatory materials)
  • ‘Open-book’ format: advocates may bring preparatory materials, books, handwritten notes into the examination hall
  • A hundred multiple-choice questions, to be marked on OMR answer sheets; Focus is on reasoning ability, rather than ability to memorise large texts
  • No percentage or ranks – advocates will merely pass or fail the All India Bar Examination

The Examination adopts a format that is aimed at ensuring that a basic amount of preparation would be sufficient to clear it.

All India Judicial Services Exam (AIJS)

AIJS 2011

The Centre’s ambitious plan to recruit 25 per cent of district judges through an All-India exam has hit a roadblock with many slate governments and high courts opposing the proposal.

Law Minister M. Veerappa Molly on Sunday conceded there was lack of unanimity on the issue. ‘The issue of All-India Judicial Service (AIJS) came up for discussions. But I here was no unanimity as the slates and their high courts have their own views,” Moily said. The minister said discussions on the issue would continue and the Centre was against imposing the decision on the states.

“The Department of Justice in the Ministry will prepare a consultation paper for consultations to tax able to evolve a consensus,’1 lie said. The Centre’s plan to create a national-level judicial service, on the pattern of the civil sen-ices is based on a number of important recommendations. The Supreme Court had favored the setting of the AIJS in 2008 and had also sought the views of all the high courts.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law and Justice has also recommended that at least one-fourth of the district judges anointed states should be through an ail-India exam. According to the law ministry, a majority of the 21 high courts haw not shown any interest in the matter, and haw expressed views against the creation of AIJS.

Architecture Entrance Exam

Architecture Exams

The major significant feature of the AIEEE that is conducted for the architecture stream is that it consists of questions to evaluate the knowledge of the students, besides their attitude towards the values and architecture perspectives.

Nowadays, architecture has become one of the most significant streams in the professional degrees. The trend has started to boost, say some 5 to 10 years ago, though it exists in practice right from the ancient times, but recently the craze for architecture has increased tremendously, as equal to streams like engineering and medicine.

AIEEE

The AIEEE is an all India level entrance examination for both engineering/architecture streams. Hence, it comprises of separate question patterns and structure for both the streams. The AIEEE pattern for B. Arch/B. Planning comprises of three important parts, part 1 consists of questions from mathematics and part 2 consists of aptitude type questions and part3 consists of engineering drawing questions. It includes questions in testing the students’ attitudes regarding people, place and environment. This has to be praised, because architecture is all about the value of the creative and constructional output, thereby placing the customers and their values in the first place, because architecture doesn’t deal with bricks and cements, rather it is more to do with the layout of a place/city/country. It is a 3 hours examination and it is usually conducted at the end of 12th standard examination. It is conducted by CBSE in India. It is also said that the AIEEE is going to get established online form the year 2011 onwards, which means the students can attend the exam online, rather attending a paper-pencil examination. The method of implementation is yet to get confirmed by the CBSE.

NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture)

This test comprises of two parts, comprising a paper based drawing test and a computer based online test. Both the tests are evaluated separately and the results are stored in the NATA server, which is then displayed to the students. Both the tests are considered to be clearly designed and also executed in the same way.

Drawing Test

The paper based drawing test is conducted for 2 hours and it consists of two questions, each with two sub questions. The drawing test would be provided with scores, based on the observation skills of the candidates and their drawing ability, their perspectives about color, proportion, etc… This drawing test evaluates the following:

  • Depth of knowledge in the three dimensional and two dimensional drawings.
  • Students’ ability and capability to draw proportionately and to produce the same as an effective output.
  • Creative attitude of the students.
  • Logical reasoning of the students regarding the scale and proportions and many more.

Aesthetic Sensitivity Test

In this test, the candidates are supposed to answer 40 multiple choice questions, which are based on the vision to evaluate the mental ability, architectural comprehensive skills, creative capability, architectural awareness, etc… This test is conducted in an interesting manner, meaning, if a student provides a correct answer to one question, then the immediate question would be tough (next difficult level), otherwise it would be vice versa. Thus, the difficulty level of the questions would be chosen by the computer itself, depending on the performance of the students and the marks would also be based on the average level of difficult questions that are asked in the examination and there are no negative markings in this test.

Engineering Entrance Exams

Engineering Exams

The engineering entrance exams are considered, as significant, especially in India, because most of the students in the country aim for engineering studies, immediately after their 12th standards.

Engineering Entrance Exams

It would be evitable for anyone, who is watching the television, because people could see the students in the TV, especially the rank holders would be portraying themselves either as doctors, or as engineers and the engineering studies would top the list. And India is known for its IITs and its strong engineering research facilities. Each and every IIT has its own research centre facilitating most of the engineering developments and infrastructure in the country. Moreover to ease the engineering admissions in the country, the government of India has established three entrance exam schemes, such as, AIEEE, JEE and SLEEE. The AIEEE and the JEE are conducted as a national level entrance exams for engineering admissions and the SLEEE are conducted as the state level entrance exams. Thus, the initiative done by the government in order to ease the admission procedures and to guide the students is really appreciable!

All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)

It comprises of two different types of question papers, one consisting of questions from the subjects, like, math, and physics, and chemistry. This is an objective type question paper with equal marks to each three subjects. The second type question paper comprises of questions from mathematics, engineering drawing and it also consists of aptitude type questions. Thus, the first type of question paper is meant for B.E. and B.Tech degree admissions and the second type question paper is meant for the B.Arch and B.Planning degree admissions. The AIEEE would award the students at national level via a national rank and would also rank the students based on the state level via a state rank. It is been accepted by many institutions that are offering the undergraduate engineering and architecture degree courses, majorly including the 30 honorable National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The 50% of the seats in the NITs would be filled up by the deserving candidates from the AIEEE entrance examinations. Hence, the candidates who appeared for the AIEEE exams could apply to many engineering institutions across the country.

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

It is popularly called as the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and it is conducted for the engineering admissions in the seventeen IITs in India. The current question pattern comprises of two objective type question papers, and each of the question papers consists of questions form subjects like, math, physics, and chemistry. The questions are designed with an objective to test the comprehensive, reasoning and analytical skills of the candidates.

State Level Engineering Entrance Examination (SLEEE)

Each state conducts its own entrance examination for the engineering admissions within the state. Further the standard and quality of the SLEEE also sticks to the AIEEE standards and procedures. Since, the state level entrance examination is designed and developed according to the specific state syllabus and curriculum, it adheres to the boundary of syllabus, thus easing the admission procedures. This further helps the students to concentrate better on their subjects.

AIEEE 2011

AIEEE

All India Engineering/Architecture Entrance Exam

The AIEEE is proving that it focuses more on the values and attitude and aptitude of the students, besides mandatory verbal, numerical and subject knowledge/capacity.

The AIEEE bears a greater significance, as it is conducted as a national level entrance examination for engineering and architectural studies in the country. Thus, this is conducted as a gateway in admitting students into the bachelor degrees such as, B. E. / B. Tech and B. Arch / B. Planning. The exam is conducted by the CBSE and it is recognized and followed by most of the reputed institutions in the country such as, NITs, IITs, Birla Institute of Technology, etc…

Exam Pattern

It comprises of two exam patterns, i.e. one exam pattern is for the engineering admissions in the country and the other one is for the architectural admissions. The exam pattern for the engineering studies consists of one paper, which in turn comprises of questions from mathematics, physics and chemistry. In this pattern, math and physics are considered as compulsory subjects and chemistry would fall into the category of optional subjects, which also consists of subjects like, biotechnology, computer science and biology. It is a 3 hour examination and the question structure is of objective type, bearing equal weightage to all the three subjects.

The exam pattern for architecture admissions consists of three parts, which involves questions from mathematics, an aptitude test paper and finally drawing test paper. The math and aptitude test consists of objective type questions, whereas the drawing test paper comprises of questions to test the drawing aptitude of the students. The aptitude test conducted for the architectural admissions comprise of questions that are designed to evaluate the mental ability and architectural aptitude of the students, besides testing the two dimensional and three dimensional drawing capability, observational capacity, and creative and reasoning abilities, etc…

AIEEE Online

The AIEEE has already made many reforms through its online counseling, online admission/registration, etc… But, recently it has also announced that it is going to be accomplished via online, which means from the year 2011 onwards, the students would be attending the AIEEE in the online, rather undergoing a paper-pencil entrance test, which is the current existing pattern of AIEEE. Hence, it is going to take the shape, similar to CAT. Thus the students would be receiving the results immediately after finishing the examination.

This is of course great news for the students, who are planning to undergo AIEEE next year for the major reason that it displays the results at the end of the exam. Thus, the students would not be facing any panicking situations, which they were facing till date, as they have to wait for their results at least 10 to 15 days, during which they cannot decide on their career. The CBSE is working hard on the effective implementation of AIEEE, as accomplishing this in practice is not that easier, because around 11 lakh students would be attending the exam. Hence, proper care must be taken right from the identity recognition procedures, organizing the exam in the study centers, before that choosing the study centers with standard and quality, according to the number of students in a particular region to monitoring till the phase of displaying results! Yes, it is a huge challenge to CBSE!

IIT JEE 2011

IIT JEE

IIT Joint Entrance Examination

IIT-JEE has become the vision of any studious person, who is in turn aspiring to get into the IITs to pursue his/her engineering dreams!

It is been conducted as an entrance examination and considered, as the sole criteria for the undergraduate admissions to all the IITs in India. Moreover, it is also accepted, as an entrance examination by other renowned institutions such as Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Kerala, etc… The examination is conducted by the IITs, based on the policy of rotation, i.e. the senior most would be getting the first chance of conducting the examination.

Preparation Tips

It is wise to use the holidays, or free times, as such, opportunities would not be available in the later stages. One could do research about the exam preparations and also can collect the sample question papers from previous years examinations, could even create a network of seniors, friends, successful winners of this examination, as it would help the person to discuss about the exam and the modes to win the same! As the IIT-JEE question paper comprises of objective type questions from the subjects mathematics, chemistry and physics, it is vivid that time is the major constraint to solve the question paper. Some significant tips on the exam preparations are listed here:

  • Planning a schedule and totally adhering to it, in the preparation phase, would definitely guide one in the right direction.
  • The question pattern consists of objective type questions from the subjects, mathematics, physics and chemistry. Hence, preparing to answer the aptitude type questions is important.
  • Practicing to allot time to each question, would help too at the time of examination. Time is important, even in most of the coaching centers/institutions, a greater value would be given to the time. Say, for example, if you have to allot a minute to one question, but you could not complete it within the time and taking more than 2 minutes would become an issue, as the time to other questions would be affected. Hence, practicing these issues, while preparing for the examination would be useful on the day of the examination.
  • One can do group discussions, or can also practice a ‘Knowledge Sharing’ procedures with his friends in order to enhance his knowledge in the subject.
  • It is a best practice to work on the previous year question papers, as it would train a candidate to the exam mode and could also get trained on the issues like, time, speed and accuracy, etc…

The most significant thing required to pursue this preparation is ‘attitude’ and ‘capability’. The attitude frames the basic quality, which means, if you have a positive and energetic attitude, then that would in turn frame your capability to manage lot of things at a time.

The academics part also play a significant role, as more than 50% of the 12th board examination is the minimum aggregate expected from the general category students. Thus, the effective management of both the academics and the entrance examinations (IIT-JEE) would definitely lead one to the direction of successful stories in IIT-JEE exams!

The GATE examination acts as the ‘great career wall’ to any aspiring, dynamic individual!

The GATE is an all India level examination, which is conducted for the admissions to the post graduate degree programs in engineering/architecture/ technology and to the doctoral programs in the relevant branches of science, falling under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).

The GATE test is administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) under the supervision of the National Coordination Board- GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The exam is also conducted for qualifying the students for other governmental scholarships /assistantships. The question pattern differs according to the paper code, i.e. it varies according to the subjects and specifications. The GATE question paper consists of multiple choice questions with an option of four answers, out of which, only one is the right answer.

Why GATE?

The GATE plays a vital role in any student’s life, if it is chosen by the student. Because, if a student gets qualified in the GATE, then he/she would be eligible for the governmental scholarships for undergoing the master degrees, and doctoral programs… These features have dragged many students towards the preparation of the examination. The most important fact is that the GATE exam bears more significance, i.e. the GATE performance would be given 70% importance in the admission process and the remaining 30% would depend on the student’s academic performance records, interview performance, etc… Thus, the fact that the GATE is one of the significant exams in the professional education couldn’t be denied!

GATE Structure

The question type is typically based on the logics and concepts of the subjects, hence having an in-depth knowledge about the subjects, would fetch more marks. It analyzes the candidates’, comprehension ability, subject knowledge, capability to solve quantitative questions, problem solving abilities, data interpretation skills and other related skills... Thus, it involves the questions based on formulae, basic principles, laws, etc. It also comprises of questions based on fundamental ideas, which in turn demands the students to derive the consequences from the basic theories and logics of the subjects. The logical reasoning section consists of questions involving mathematical computation and application-oriented questions, thereby requiring the students to implement their subject knowledge.

The analysis and the interpretation section consists of linked type questions and common data questions.  The questions formed would be independent, but the solutions to both the questions could be obtained from the given passage, or data. The linked type comprises problem solving type of questions. The GATE 2011 question paper is said to have 5 different patterns for 5 groups of specifications and these details are clearly stated in the official website for GATE.
